I’m not even quite sure why the jabs that are thrown in this article are relevant to the discussion of Halo 3 and the XBOX 360, but Don Reisinger from CNET sure seems to have a few opinions on the Nintendo console. What starts off as a decent writeup concerning the success of Halo 3 on the 360 wanders aimlessly into bringing up how successful the Wii is right now and even last month, but then does a 180 claiming the hype for the Wii is “finally dropping”. “Finally” dropping? As if you’ve been waiting on it impatiently and oh,” it’s FINALLY dropping, I knew it would!” Again, I’m not even sure the sections discussing the Wii even belong in the blog post by Reisinger, which reads like a Halo 3/XBOX 360 fluff piece riddled with anti-Nintendo sentiment despite their success. I’ll let a few of his own words speak for themselves:

As we’re all aware, Nintendo currently enjoys the top spot in the video game console war. With nearly 404,000 Wii units sold last month alone, Nintendo is hands down the most successful hardware company of this generation. And while Nintendo fans are quick to cite this number when their favorite console is under attack, they fail to mention how it compares to previous months.

According to The NPD Group, Nintendo Wii sales dropped 5 percent from July, while the Xbox 360, with 277,000 units sold, witnessed a sales increase of 63 percent from July. To round it out, the abysmal Playstation 3 sold just 131,000 units–a drop of nearly 18 percent.

Oh, the “abysmal” PS3 huh? Not that it did abysmally, but that the system is abysmal. Continuing on:

Sure, the Nintendo Wii is doing well and it continues to sell better than the competition, but the main reason the Xbox 360 did so well last month was its software. Most notably, Madden.

Ok, terrific, but why even bring up Nintendo here? Can we not praise MS for it’s successes without also bashing Nintendo here? It just doesn’t seem to fit for any other reason than to cast a stone. Leave it at “Microsoft had a great month last month, the main reason due to software sales of Madden 08.” or something similar. More:

Up to this point, the Playstation 3 has performed about as poorly as we can expect from a console. With no games to tout as deal breakers, the PlayStation 3 is dead in the water. And while some still hope for the days of Killzone saving the PS3’s day, it’s time to give up hope–nothing can save it now.

But Nintendo is in an entirely different situation. There is no denying the fact that Nintendo has a stranglehold on the industry and has realized that by appealing to the general public instead of just gamers, it can have some success.

But the main issue with Nintendo is its poor software library that is rife with mini games and barely appealing titles that don’t offer enough of an experience to appeal to owners for too long. At this point, the Nintendo Wii feels more like a novelty item than a video game console.

It’s a double bashing! Give up on the PS3 guys.. “Nothing can save it now.” Was this guy paid by Microsoft? If not, he should be on their guerrilla marketing payroll. The comments about Nintendo again, don’t belong in a post titled “Why ‘Halo 3′ will decide the Xbox 360’s fate“.

I don’t know.. It’s just a strange article overall. Regardless of whether or not it belongs, the underlying message is that the Nintendo library is poor and now that Halo 3 is here, the Wii is doomed. Did he forget about SSBM? Or Mario Kart? Or Mario Galaxy coming? Heck, even Wii Fit is destined to be a hit. What do you think about the situation and what this guy is saying? I think he’s nuts personally on both angles, the PS3 has yet to show it’s true colors and the Nintendo is still doing very strong with some insanely strong titles still to come. Not to mention, he’s comparing software from a console that’s been out for a year prior to the other consoles with said other consoles line-ups. For being out under a year, having titles like Zelda, Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4, and other fun games under your belt and still being able to sell out the console where ever it ships is quite a feat that any gaming journalist should be able to acknowledge. Not mindlessly bash it in a post concerning how well the 360 is doing due to Halo 3. What say you, fine readers of this Nintendo blogsite?
