Bits Bytes Pixels and Sprites has confirmed that due to licensing restrictions, all player names have been removed from the Virtual Console version of Tecmo Bowl. When the game was released for the NES, it has the Player’s Association license which allowed it to use player names, but not team names. Between then and now, things have changed however in the legal realm and the game can no longer use those names without paying hefty licensing fees. Does it affect the gameplay? Not at all, but it might affect how players feel about the game. Do you care if Tecmo Bowl has real player names?

If Nintendo is willing to go and modify their VC titles in this way, why can’t they modify them to be online capable? I realize it’s a slightly more daunting task than removing names from a game, but if they already aren’t giving us the EXACT same game as the original, why not make some improvements? XBLA has definitely got retro gamers in mind for their releases, and Nintendo shouldn’t be left in Microsoft’s dust.
